carpenter ant Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants are the most common pest ant in homes in the Northern United States. The main colony needs a constant source of moisture to survive. They are usually located outside of the house in dead wood such as rotting trees, tree stumps and firewood. In the spring they then establish satellite colonies within your home with the help of winged reproductive ants known as swarmers, much like the termite swarmers, that fly out in search of areas to establish satellite colonies and then shed their wings. They will then set up trunk trails between each other and the main colony, creating a giant network so that if need be they can transport food from one to another. They are very hard to destroy because in addition to having to locate and treat each individual satellite colony you must also locate and destroy the main colony, which could be in some cases as far as a neighboring yard or even high up in a rotting tree.
